Buying a Breakdown Cover is necessary if you want to protect yourself from hassle of breakdown due to any reason. Approximately 20,000 vehicle owners seek help of breakdown services daily in Britain. During adverse weather conditions like rain, fog or cold there are more vehicle problems that need to be serviced. Taking a vehicle breakdown cover is important if you have an old vehicle with a history of breakdowns or if you have a new vehicle. The only difference being that you will need a comprehensive policy for old vehicle.

Types of Breakdown Cover:

There are basically 3 types of covers:

1. Basic Cover: Basic cover provides roadside assistance if your car (or vehicle) breaks or will be towed to nearest workshop. However if you breakdown is within some mentioned distance from your home, you will not get any assistance.

2. Home Start Cover: This policy provides you benefits of Basic cover plus you will get assistance even if your car breaks down near your home (even if it refuses to start at your home).

3. Onward Travel Policy: This type of policy provides you additional benefits of getting a car hire if your car remains in garage for repair or it will cover the costs of travelling by any public transport.

European Breakdown Cover:

If you often travel abroad with your car consider taking a European Breakdown cover instead of UK Breakdown cover. For a short term travel you can talk to your policy provider to upgrade your current UK breakdown policy to a European breakdown policy. It is recommended to check out the price of upgrading a policy for short term and taking a European cover for one full year.

Most of the Breakdown cover policies are Automatic Service kind in which you simply call them and they provide you assistance through their patrols. But there are some providers that provide Pay and Claim facility in which they send a recovery firm of your choice and you have to pay for repair. After that you can claim that amount by sending receipts to them.
